Since learning how to ride a road bike in her 50s, Lynda Griffiths has challenged herself to ride further and faster.

The 59-year-old Meadowbrook local will climb Brisbane’s highest peak with the Spin Sistas cycling group this April as part of the Great Brisbane Bike Ride and Coot-tha Challenge.

Ms Griffiths said she hoped to encourage more women to get involved in the sport.

“What started out as a social Saturday morning ritual has turned into a passion for pushing my limits, building my bike fitness and setting ride goals,” Ms Griffiths said.

“Just four years ago I was a complete novice and over time with the help of Spin Sistas I’ve been able to build my confidence and skill as a rider to take on mass events like the Coot-tha Challenge.

“It’s something I never dreamed I’d be able to do and I’m sure a lot of other women feel the same way.

“My advice is to give it a go! Get on a bike, get lessons, and start smashing goals, because there is honestly no better feeling. It’s exhilarating.”

Ms Griffiths is one of 14 Spin Sistas taking part in the 75km ride featuring a 2.3km climb up Brisbane’s highest peak.

“Our group members range from around 30-75 years old and we all share a passion for getting more women on bikes,” she said.

“This ride is a beautiful way to see Brisbane and we hope that our involvement will inspire other women to take up the sport.”

The Great Brisbane Bike Ride & Coot-tha Challenge will be held on Sunday, 29 April.

The Bicycle Queensland event is for people of all ages and fitness levels, with three course options – 110km, 75km, and 40km – as well as a Family Fun Ride.

For more daring riders there will be an optional Mount Coot-tha Challenge — a timed 2.3km, 9 per cent climb, up Brisbane’s highest peak.
