The Great Brisbane Bike Ride (including the Coot-tha Challenge) is the feature event of Bike Week, an annual week-long celebration of cycling.
Since 2008, this Bicycle Queensland event has included a timed 2.3km, 9% climb up Mt Coot-tha. It is a challenge for riders who do this regularly to clock the best or their best time overall; a challenge for riders who only do it once a year to better their time from last year; and a challenge for many to climb Mt Coot-tha for the very first time – no matter how long it may take!
In 2018, we’ll be offering four routes with varied distances and difficulty levels, including the optional famed Coot-tha climb for the 110km and 75km riders. This ride includes police, traffic controllers, marshals, SAG wagon plus medical and mechanical support.
There’s a challenge for bike riders of all levels!
If you regularly eat Coot-tha up for breakfast, then push yourself further with our monster 110km route which adds to the 75km route by taking you up, down and west to the Moggill Ferry, the outskirts of Ipswich and a loop return via Redbank, Oxley and the traditional river route. (Overall distance will be less if you opt out of the Coot-tha climb – rejoining riders after a quick detour).
This route crosses Brisbane from east to west, and from top to bottom. This iconic Brisbane event features the Gateway Bridge, closed lanes on Kingsford Smith Drive and a car-free Inner City Bypass, then Brisbane’s famous climb – Mt Coot-tha! (Overall distance will be less if you opt out of the Coot-tha climb – rejoining riders after a quick detour).
For an easier, flatter “Sights of Brisbane” tour, try the 40km route. Initially following the same route through South Brisbane, across the Gateway Bridge and along the Inner City Bypass, we then divert away from the 75km and 110km riders at Suncorp Stadium (rest stop), then continue along the river to UQ at St Lucia before returning to West End along the traditional river route.
Join us for a 10 km ride that is suitable for the whole family and cycle on some of Brisbane’s best bike paths along our magnificent river. Not familiar with this beautiful part of town? Don’t worry, our experienced ride leader will show you the way, no prior knowledge of inner city bikeways necessary.
Marshals along the route will ensure all riders stay safe and everybody has a great time. From grownups pulling a trailer, children riding on a bike seat and little ones piloting their own bikes, this ride is for everyone. Don’t miss this great opportunity to explore Brisbane with your family and friends.
After the ride relax with a bite to eat, a coffee or a cold drink from the fantastic vendors at the finish site. For our younger riders, Bicycle Queensland has organised a variety of fun activities including a Shrek themed jumping castle.
Come along and enjoy a great day out, life is always more fun on a bike.
